Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Google API key, and where do I get one?
Yes. PhotoCaptioner AI uses your own Google Gemini API key to generate captions — you bring your own key so you stay in control of your usage. You can create a free Gemini API key at Google AI Studio and enter it in Settings → API Keys. A Google Places API key is optional and only needed if you want GPS-verified nearby place names in your captions.
Why am I seeing a quota or "429" error?
That means your Google API key has hit its usage limit for the current period. Google's free tier has a small daily and per-minute request allowance. You have two options:
- Wait for the quota to reset — free-tier limits reset automatically (per-minute limits reset within a minute; daily limits reset each day).
- Enable billing on your Google Cloud project for higher limits, then turn on Settings → Model → "Billing enabled" in the app.
Creating additional Google accounts is not a supported workaround and may cause Google to suspend your account — please use one of the two options above.
What's included in the free tier, and what does Pro cost?
You can caption up to 25 images for free, with no account required. After that, a one-time $14.99 Pro Unlock (limited-time sale — regularly $24.99) gives you unlimited captions. It's a single purchase — no subscription — and all future updates are included.
How do I upgrade or restore my purchase?
Once you've used your 25 free images, the upgrade screen appears automatically when you try to caption more. To restore a purchase you've already made (for example on another Mac signed in to the same Apple ID), open Settings → General → Restore Purchase.
Where are my captions saved?
Captions are written directly into each image's EXIF and IPTC metadata and saved alongside your original files — there's no proprietary database and no lock-in. Your original files are preserved.
Are my photos and API key private?
Yes. Your photos are sent directly from your Mac to Google's API using your own key — they never pass through our servers (we don't operate any). Your API key is stored only in the macOS Keychain. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Which formats and macOS versions are supported?
PhotoCaptioner AI runs on macOS 15 Sequoia and later and supports JPEG, HEIC, PNG, TIFF, and DNG/RAW images.
